Easter is a great time of year to get together with family and friends and have fun with traditional games.

An Easter egg hunt is one of the most popular forms of Easter entertainment for children and organizing one is easy and fun to do.

Your first family activity is to get imaginative with the kids and make some themed Easter invites for your family and friends. Make sure you send these out a few weeks before your Easter party so they can get the date in their diary.

Next, stock up on Easter eggs and treats to hide in nooks and crannies of your house and garden.

Then create clues to finding the hiding places of the chocolate treats .  Giving each child a treasure map to hunt for chocolate treats is a fun way of doing this.

To make sure everyone finds an egg it’s a good idea for each treasure map to have the “x” in a slightly different location.

You will need the following to make your treasure map :

  • Paper
  • A cold cup of tea (without milk)
  • Paint brush
  • Matches, a lighter or a candle
  • Pens, pencils, crayons
  • Ribbon

The first step is to make the Easter egg hunt map look as though it’s hundreds of years old and has been passed down from bounty hunter to bounty hunter .   To do this you need to stain the paper with tea to give it an aged look .  All you need to do is give the paper a wash with the cold tea, using the paint brush, and then allow it to dry.  The best way to dry the paper is to peg it out on a washing line .

When dry you can make your Easter egg hunt map look even more tattered by carefully scorching the edges of the paper .  The best way to do this is hold the edge of the paper carefully over a small flame until they start to scorch . Then speedily blow out any flames so you have a tatty, singed edge.

Alternatively you could just tear the edges of the map to give it a ancient appearance .

Next you need to draw the map of where you plan to hide your Easter eggs.  Draw a rough outline of the area and then fill it in with more detail .  It doesn’t have to be perfect but give a general idea of your home or garden.  To make it more fun you could give names to particular areas.  “The Lair of the Easter Bunny”, “Egg Man’s Creek”, “The Easter Chick’s Nest”..  Be imaginative and creative in putting your map together.

Once you have finished making your treasure maps you then need to hide your eggs and mark the map with a cross (or an egg) to show where they are hidden.

The finishing touch for your Easter egg hunt map is to roll it up and seal it.  You can either tie it with a length of ribbon, or seal it with wax.  To seal it with wax, light a candle and then drip the hot wax onto the map.  You could even make your own seal to press into the wax by carving a shape into a small potato and pressing it into the wax before it’s cold.

Your maps are now ready for the Easter egg hunters.  Issue one to each party guest and wish them happy hunting.
