So, what’s the difference between a tube birdfeeder and a platform birdfeeder?
Basically, each bird feeder draws in unique bird species and serves specific bird foods.
Platform birdfeeders are designed for birds who like to eat bird birdseed (and insects) on the ground. These bird feeders can be placed a bit above the soil, or installed on a deck, a tree, or a tree stump. Some are also meant to be attached to a rod or a fence post.
Yet another difference between tube birdfeeders and platform birdfeeders is how the bird seed is distributed. Hanging bird feeders include slits or little openings that allow birds to tug seeds out, a lot like they would from plants. On platform bird feeders, the bird seed is scattered or piled on the platform, just as it is when seeds drop from plants.
With any birdfeeder, the species of birds that are attracted is determined by the food provided. However, if you are using a platform feeder, or fly thru feeder, you might end up seeing a cardinal or other larger birds that can’t use tube bird feeders, or that are insect-eaters.
Squirrels are not as likely to reach the bird seed if you hang platform birdfeeders. In fact, some models are protected with screening that accommodates birds and not squirrels. And any feature that keeps those squirrels from filling their cheeks with seeds will save you money.
Platform bird feeders are also easy to maintain and clean… always a good thing.
Just don’t forget that a combination of tube bird feeders and platform bird feeders will appeal to a larger variety of birds to your bird garden.
Platform birdfeeders can also accommodate insects. When you place an additional platform feeder in your yard particularly for insects, you’ll start attracting insect-eating birds as well. This is especially important all through the winter, when insects are hard to find.
A great way to entice insect-eating birds into your garden is to provide them with mealworms or grubs on a platform bird feeder. Once they become accustomed to coming to your yard for food, they’ll begin looking for bugs on their own.
Check out how supplying bugs on a platform bird feeder can lead to an organic pest control solution. That’s right. Platform birdfeeders can attract insect-eating birds… and that’s an easy-peasy start to organic gardening!
