Visiting the Garden

Today, I ventured out to the garden.  To say I have been somewhat neglectful would be an understatement.  Between the baby, the dogs and just winter in general, the garden has had to fend for itself.  Which is always an interesting. Sure the temperamental types die off, but some plants flourish with neglect. Guess they are just happier being left alone.

A Rustic Garden

In San Francisco, we could garden year round.  I actually look forward to the rainy season as an excuse not to tend to the garden.  Rainfall had been light this year, so I guess I admit I’ve been remiss.  The yard has been inundated with clover.  Clover can been pretty for a while, before it gets to stringy – but it tends to take over and choke out other seedlings.  So, I did a quick weeding.  With clover, like weeds, it’s about making sure you get the roots.

The daffodils are blooming and the plum and cherry trees are in full bloom.  And of course, the Callas.  The lack of rain has meant the days are unseasonably warm confusing the early bloomers.  It’s a little too early to do anything serious in the garden, but it never hurts to do a little clean up.  I pruned a few dead branches, pulled some weeds and assessed the overall health of the garden.  No major interventions were needed.

I have to say returning the garden after a bit of a break, I quickly felt the joy of puttering.  Even Puck, our chocolate lab took advantage of the sunny day to sun himself.  Due to limited availability this year after the baby’s arrival, the garden is going to have to be somewhat self-sustaining.  But with a little weeding here and there and some regular watering it will be just fine.

Our garden is littered with little garden art that reminds me of a trips past – A  rustic hummingbird  from Santa Barbara, a gecko from Mexico City or a gnome from Berlin.    A trip down memory lane on a lazy afternoon in the garden.
