Growing healthy food

Organic food is nothing new. From the earliest recorded history, food has been organic—grown without synthetic chemical pesticides and manures or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Only in the 20th century did the food supply become non-organic. While non-organic food remains a new phenomenon in the world, more people—from gourmet chefs to average consumers—prefer food more like it was before chemicals.

Growing organic food, without synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, is actually more economical and takes less labor over time as you work with nature. Modern growing methods, used by many organic farmers, make it easy and efficient to grow an abundance of crops in your own backyard or balcony—often without breaking a sweat. At the same time, you enjoy eating healthy food, more savory than anything you could buy. Methods for how to grow organic food range from traditional wisdom to 20th century innovations. But simple ideas and common sense can guide you to grow healthy plants and soil.

Organic gardening begins with the natural landscape and always depends on plenty of variety—from living soil to diversity of plants. You can start with just a few square feet of garden space or a few containers in a sunny area. You can always expand once you get the feel of organic gardening. Some shade is fine, as long as there is sun several hours a day.

Healthy soil is critical! Healthy soil is alive with billions of microorganisms and thousands of worms busy breaking down organic matter and producing necessary nutrients for plants. If your soil is bad, you can have it tested for free at a local county extension office or test it yourself with a kit. But by adding organic matter to the topsoil, you can soon build up a strong soil structure. Remove old debris from the ground and break up soil—without turning topsoil too far down. Cover the garden area with thin layers of fresh organic matter—leaves, dried grass, decaying plants or compost. Compost is decomposed organic matter, which has been reduced to a dark, rich and sweet smelling texture. You can use compost as a soil amendment or protective mulch. You can make your own compost, find some in nearby fertile landscapes or purchase some from a quality garden store. Organic matter inoculates your garden soil with the beneficial life forms necessary to work the soil. Any simple organic matter will also attract worms if there are none in your existing soil. Mix organic material into the topsoil, but not too deep—and do not compact or walk on soil around where plants are growing. Living organisms in soil need oxygen and space to thrive in. Be patient.

Microorganisms, insects and worms will do most of your garden work over time, breaking up soil and producing plant nutrients. Keep soil damp, but not soggy, so it can allow in air. Start your own compost pile to mix with soil from time to time. Composting can be an elaborate operation or as simple as heaping up clean organic material—from leaves to paper bags and kitchen scraps to grass clippings. Mix pile and keep it moist. It will decompose to rich, dark matter. Plant Organic Seeds and Plants Organic food must begin with organic seeds and plants. Conventional seeds are treated with chemical herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. It is important not to use chemical pesticides or fertilizers in the garden. Food grown with synthetic chemicals of any kind is not organic. Pesticides kill the very insects, which are predators to the bad pests. By building healthy soil with organic matter, you will provide plants with a complex soil structure of immunity. Healthy soil and a diversity of plants will create an ecosystem more naturally resistant to pests.

Grow natural pesticides, like garlic, anise or catnip. For other strategies to protect against pests, you can practice multi-cropping. For instance, marigolds next to tomatoes and onions help to repel aphids and spider mites. Many organic pesticide products are also available. Grow organic food with healthy soil and your garden will produce all summer long—or all year long. There are many ingenious methods for how to grow organic food. Instead of spending money on countless bags of pesticides and manure, which kill the soil, use the organic matter already in your own backyard to build healthy soil. Then let nature do most of the work—while you enjoy the harvest. The key to a healthy organic garden is biodiversity—a variety of plants supported by a living soil full of active microorganisms, insects and worms.

Organic gardening is far less about toiling and tilling the ground and much more about letting nature work at its own pace to produce more harvest. Even if you have no land, you can grow organic food on your balcony, up on the roof, in a community garden or even in an old lot.

After the ‘busyness’ of the Christmas season, you don’t want to change your momentum. And the welcoming of the New Year has just motivated you to think of something exciting or fun thing to do this year. Crazy ideas pop into your head, should you be ones an irritable housewife or a very busy office worker, performing something for a change is already a fantastic prospect. Why look for something outside of the ‘box’ when it is just right before you. Get rid by re-using or perhaps recycling that big real Christmas trees that you just had for the past few weeks. Recycling and knowing that you just aided something or have taken something out of nothing is so motivating and therefore it could be fun if you put your heart in it.

Make the following as part of your things-to-do after the holiday break – clean up, recycle or re-use that huge Christmas tree that is real obviously. The dried out tree you got from real Christmas trees Sydney farm could be disposed and reused at the same time as opposed to its fake and plastic counterparts which are growing rapidly these days. It’s true that really Christmas trees are created from nature, and to Mother Earth it is going to go back. Therefore how would you do this? Re-use the tree. Take out all the gorgeous trinkets and bring it outside your yard so it works as a helpful shelter for the birds particularly in the winter time when nearly all trees don’t have leaves and snow is scattered all over the place. You may also shred the tree into compost. Stock up all the compost in a storage place and bring them out for the summer and spring months to be used as protection for flower beds and flower plantations.

And then if the trees are disposed but grouped together, they make a very effective barrier against soil erosion on sandy beaches and soft soil. If dumped together in the forest, they serve as a cozy hiding place for tiny animals just like rabbits, squirrels, moles and a lot more. In the same way branches or pieces thrown purposely on fish ponds and lakes make it a great habitat marine life to thrive.

If you like that fresh pine scent while you enter the family room, you can actually still use it. Really, how so? The Fir variety is the best one for this. If you make them into tiny pieces, it can be used as additional stuffing for throw pillows. And it’s still savory when cuddled. You will have visitors wondering where that aroma is originating from. One more, you can also make use of those small pieces of pine chips for filling all your rooms with a potpourri like fresh aroma.

So now you could conclude that purchasing real trees from real Christmas trees Sydney farms isn’t bad at all. You get to enjoy its fresh pine scent, marvel at its evergreen grace and beauty however simultaneously, disposing it is not a waste, knowing that it can continually be utilized for something else. For humans and animals, the tree is very useful. Is not that cool?

Gardening tools have been used ever since people first started cultivating plants for food. In fact, there are even some original gardening tools that are designed so efficiently that these are still used today. The garden tools you may need should be chosen to suit the size of your garden and how well you’re able to access the beds. Even the most basic types of garden tools will be just fine for creating a wonderful garden. Of course you will need to till or break up the soil, dig and perform general maintenance. It’s simple enough to learn which tools will suit your needs best. This article will discuss some basic tools and their function within your garden.

Owning several types of hoes is not unusual for those who are serious about gardening depending on the different applications they are suited for. Since broader hoes can move more soil at one time, they are ideal for big tasks. You will be able to dig a trench that is ideal for planting because it is longer and deeper. Some people use the broad hoe for weeding or clearing standing weeds to prep a garden area. The Warren hoe is another type of garden tool generally used in narrower spaces.

When working with long handled tools it is imperative that you wear gloves. Despite the fact that the wood is finished, there is still a risk of you getting a splinter. Every garden can benefit from a compost pile, which is a great option for any keen gardener. And the ideal garden tool to work a compost pile is a pitch fork. Pitch forks are very handy tools to have in any garden. For turning compost or loosening compacted soil, a spading fork is also a good idea. Yet if you need to start a new garden bed or perhaps start over again with an existing one, you may want a square spade. With a square spade, you can easily turn over the garden bed quickly ready to place your new plants. It’s important to choose good quality materials for larger garden tools like these to increase durability.

There are plenty of tasks you can do in your yard that will benefit your various gardens. A leaf rake is another tool that is good to have, because leaves will certainly blow into your garden during the fall. Of course we realize some people let their gardens go after season and into fall. Anything that is left undone in the fall will have to be done in the spring, when it may be harder to do. To break up the soil in your garden, and keep it clean throughout the year, you will need a leaf rake. The wind can blow leaves, and debris into your garden, so you will want to remove them before that happens. Good quality tools, such as a leaf rake, make gardening much more enjoyable.

We believe that owning great quality gardening tools is critical, which is why we often recommend that inferior tools be replaced. If your toolbox consists of poorly constructed tools, it might be an idea to replace them with stronger pieces that will last you a lot longer. Once you do so, you will find it a lot easier to do everything and you will be more efficient at completing your tasks.

Just how long have you been failing with your current Wooden Garden Storage? Seriously, how long do you foresee this to continue? Why endure the pain of Gardening when it is not needed?

This is the season for garden enthusiasts; the sun and earth are perfect for planting. When you want the perfect lawn and garden, the first step is to use fertilizer; it adds important nutrients to the soil to make your lawn and garden grow properly. Whether you are on a working farm or container gardening in the middle of the city, fertilizing the soil before you plant the first seed is critical to growing your garden.

When you visit your local home improvement store, you will find that there are hundreds of different products that you can use.

Organic fertilizer is all natural; manure, compost, are a type of organic fertilizer, it may sound unpleasant however studies have shown that lawns using organic fertilizer grow greener and gardens grow bigger vegetable. Inorganic fertilizer is made from chemicals such as rock phosphate. There are advantages to using either of these fertilizers.

Compost is an organic fertilizer that you can make yourself; you can use anything that is organic. All you do is put some type of bin far away from your windows and throw all of your organic trash in it. You can keep adding to it as long as you add water and turn it often. You will know when your compost is ready because it looks like soil and smells earthy.

Both organic and inorganic fertilizers offer the same nutritional value; however, the differences between the two are significant:

Organic fertilizer needs to be broken down into microorganisms; the soil does all the work however it does take a little time. Only then will the nutrients be released into the soil. Using organic fertilizer improves the soil and increases the amount of water and nutrients it can hold. When you use organic fertilizer, the risk of toxicity is almost non-existent.

Inorganic fertilizer is already broken down so it is ready for plants to absorb it; with inorganic fertilizer however, leaching is a big problem. When it rains, the rainwater causes a reaction called ‘washing’ below the ground level around the plant roots. Another problem that occurs when using inorganic fertilizer is that the chemicals can actually burn the seeds that are planted. The third problem that can occur with inorganic fertilizer is that if you use too much, it can build on toxic amounts of salt in the soil.

The type of animal the fertilizer comes from will determine the amount of nutrients that are in the fertilizer itself. Different animals consume different foods so it is important to find out what type of organic fertilizer you are purchasing.

To purchase organic fertilizer, you can visit your local home improvement store, most of them carry organic fertilizer in bags, however if you want fresh fertilizer, go right to the source! Call or visit a farm in your area. If you do not have your own truck, for a small fee, most will deliver it right to your yard.

Many people are turning toward organic based food; they feel that many of the foods that are sold today have too many chemicals in them. When you grow the fruits and vegetables yourself, it is always more satisfying to eat because you did all the work yourself.

Make gardening and yard work easy with these amazing garden tools and yard tools.

Growing your own fresh, organic produce is satisfying on so many levels. Flavor; the convenience of walking out to your garden to select fresh vegetables to prepare for a family meal; reduction of food costs; and knowing the origin of your food source, are just a few. Gardening can be both an art and a science, and it can take some trial and error to get to the point where you can rely on your own green thumb to provide an adequate food source for your family. Here are a few basic tips that can help you get started with your own organic backyard garden.

Placement

Choosing an area for your garden is the first step, and should be considered one of the most crucial. Vegetables require a fair amount of sunshine, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of sun per day. If you need to clear an area of vegetation before working the soil, wet down the area and cover it with a layer of black plastic for 3-4 weeks prior to digging up the area. This will rid the plot of existing grass and weeds, and will also sterilize the soil, killing any dormant weed seeds. To ensure a truly organic garden, you’ll also want to make sure that your garden is not located in an area that was recently treated with lawn chemicals or pesticides. If you have difficulty meeting any of these requirements, a raised garden bed is an excellent and easy solution to existing soil or location problems, as it can be located anyplace on your property, including a sunny patio.

Soil

The soil needs to be well-drained, and have a rich organic consistency. Add peat moss, and a variety of composted materials to build up your soil. If you are using a raised bed garden, you can create your own soil mix by combining peat moss, vermiculite, and compost in equal portions. All of these materials can be purchased at your local garden center.
You’ll also want to start your own compost pile for ongoing inexpensive soil amendments.

Planting

When selecting what to grow, it is best to start small, and choose plants that your family likes to eat or that can be added to dishes that appeal to your family. Be sure to choose seeds that are organic or open pollinated, and if purchasing seedlings, choose the organic varieties. Garden centers and online seeds shops are a good source of organic seeds and seedlings, however if you are unable to find them commercially, starting your own seeds indoors in a greenhouse is a cost-effective way to ensure that your plants are organic. First-time gardeners may want to start with plants such as beans, peas, carrots, onions, squash, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and pumpkins as they are all easy to grow and need little care. Be sure to water transplanted seedlings and newly planted seeds well to encourage germination.

Weed Control

If you sterilized the soil prior to planting your garden or you’re using the raised bed garden technique and created your own mix of soil, weed growth should be minimal. Sowing seeds in close proximity, and companion planting (such as growing marigolds next to tomatoes) results in very little room for weeds to grow between plants. Once the vegetables are established, mulching around the plants and on garden paths is a very effective method of maintaining a weed free garden, and also builds up your soil as the mulch decomposes. When using mulch, be sure that it contains only organic materials (not grass clippings that have been treated with lawn chemicals). Keep any new weeds at bay by hoeing and weeding by hand regularly. When hand weeding, be sure to pull the weed from the base of the plant to ensure that you get the entire root. Pouring boiling water over the entire plant is also an effective way to kill established weeds.

Insects and Pests

Many insects are beneficial to your garden, and organic gardening encourages bees, butterflies, earth worms, and frogs to make themselves at home. Earth worms can be purchased and added to your soil. Lady bugs are also a welcome friend to organic gardeners as they feed on aphids which love to chew on leafy greens. Remove any unwanted pests by hand. Slugs, which can do a great deal of damage in very little time, can be deterred by using beer traps (shallow containers such as jar lids, filled with beer). Rabbits, deer, and other four legged creatures can be kept out of your garden by installing a fence around the circumference of the plot. Fencing is easily installed by using steel fence posts and 4′ high wire mesh. Secure the bottom of the fence to the ground with stakes, and make sure the openings at the bottom of the mesh are small enough to keep the baby rabbits out too, as they can be very destructive all by themselves. If you need more deterrent, tried used kitty litter or a commercial prepared product such as Liquid Fence.

Water

Watering your garden until plants are well established, and during dry spells, will keep them healthy and better able to ward off diseases and pests.
Watering in the morning will reduce problems with pests that like dark, moist places to hide (slugs). It also gives the plants extra energy to get through the hot, sultry days of summer.

Journal

Keeping a garden journal that includes dates, plant names, and photos will help you track what works and what, if any modifications you need to make for planning your garden next year. The photos will help with crop rotation, by helping you track where things were planted so you can move them around every year.

Don’t forget to get the whole family involved. Teaching your children to garden is educational and they’ll learn lifelong skills that are healthy, enjoyable, and useful. Gardening is a hobby that can bring your family closer together, while creating memories and healthy eating habits that each of you can benefit from and cherish for years to come.

Professional Gardening Guidance

Many people might not be aware that garden can in fact harm the actual environment. A large quantity of carbon dioxide might be released through tilling the soil. This contributes to climate change. When you cultivating and compacting the actual soil, destroys good fungi. Fertilizers like nitrogen and even manure often leach out of the actual soil and also pollute the water you drink.

Climate change

Are you aware that the earth’s soil gives out carbon dioxide in the atmosphere 10 times more than all human activity? This comes from the pill bugs, microbes, fungi as well as worms when they breathe, digest food plus then die. Although in the past plants have been able of absorbing carbon dioxide caused by small-scale tillages, this isn’t the actual case nowadays.

The increase of the planet’s average temperature is because of the carbon dioxide the soil emits when tilled. The very good news is that tilling can be minimized by mulching or sheet composting.

Professional Gardening Guidance

Good Fungi

In untilled soil, there’s beneficial fungi often known as the vesicular-arbuscular-mycorrhizae or VAM for brief. VAM in fact forms a symbiotic relationship with plants. Their filaments increase root hairs and provide nutrients to the plant. They give out zinc, copper, potassium plus phosphorus. Plants provide carbohydrates for the fungi in return. It’s possible to grow a gardening without tilling the soil at all by mulching heavily until the actual soil is soft as well as friable.

Surplus Nitrogen

Many gardeners waste nitrogen plus manures; farmers do otherwise. Farmers really need a quarter to a third of nitrogen to mix which has an inch of compost, horse, or cow manure. Kate Burroughs of Sebastopol California, uses the same rule on her home-grown lettuce and sweet corns. When it comes to broccoli and pear trees, farmers really need a little amount. Notice that gardeners apply larger amounts of compost and also manure than farmers. Obviously, they are not only wasting their fertilizer however likewise their money.

The best garden advice which can be given to those concerned should be to do things with moderation. Keep in mind that far too little and even too much of something is not healthy. This really is the most valuable advice it’s possible to have in garden.

When life gets crazy – an unending list of chores – work projects, volunteering, stuff around the house – I head off into nature.

My escape has always been go hug a tree. But sometimes getting away isn’t so easy. Load up the truck, corral the dogs, prod Husband off the couch – you get the point. So, I brought nature to me. I started gardening. It started off easy enough – a houseplant here, a few herbs over the sink – and soon I’m rototilling the back forty. Well, we live in SF, so it’s more like the back 15×12 – but I digress.

Gardening is simple, if you remember a few basics –

“I’m thirsty!” – Well, I heard you can over water, but I’ve yet to see it. The trick is to insure that your plants aren’t in standing water. When you are potting a plant, line the bottom with pebbles to insure there is plenty of drainage.

“No critters!!” – Even the most diligent green thumb battles bugs. Fight nature with nature – Marigolds give off a odour that aphids don’t like, so plant them around your rose bushes. Garlic does, too!

“One woman’s garbage” – is another woman’s compost. There are many good resources on how to compost, check them out. After a few months, your trash transforms to nutrient rich supplement for your garden.

“Worms poop, and that’s a good thing” – Worm poop (castings) provide wonderful nutrition for your plants; drop a few in your compost heap. In their travels, they also help aerate the soil.

Be Nice to the Little Ole Ladies – There IS a garden club in your area. In it there are little old ladies and lanky old men–and an occasional gardening stud–who, if you are nice and bring a covered dish to their meeting–will clue you into EVERYTHING you will ever need to know about growing things in your microclimate. And if your dish is tasty, they just might supply you with bulbs and cuttings from their imposing yards and all the tips you need to eventually out-green them.

And remember – If you’ve been inside all winter, wear sunscreen. The April sun can be harsh. If you’re like me you’ll lose track of time, as you daydream about becoming the next Martha Stewart – so lather up!

Bear at Home celebrates the places and products which remind us of a simpler time when craftsmanship guaranteed satisfaction, and service was just good business.
10 things to consider for sustainable landscaping

Sustainable Landscapes is the process of working with the environment where you design landscapes that is in tune with the weather conditions

It requires minimal additional resources such as organic fertilizer and water.

There are many different levels of sustainable landscaping, the best way to get involved is to just start somewhere by setting short and long term goals.

A modest aim could be having the compost bin.

A lifelong objective could be creating a sustainable garden that includes choosing earth friendly shrubs and healthy soils.

Here are 10 tips to create a more sustainable landscapings Calgary design on your piece of paradise:

1. Compress your yard - Large areas of your open turf takes a big lot of your soil products. Eliminate some of your lawn and create a more natural landscape. You’ll save on fresh water and this ultimately save you money on water bills. Also you don’t need to mow a lot.

2. Collect some rain water - Harvesting rain water in barrels helps to conserve water and save money. Usually rain water is pure and of good quality. You can use it to water your garden, your houseplants or even wash your hair with it.

3. Use Mulch - Ground covers like mulch, boosts your garden features. But more than importantly, mulch protects the plants’ root systems and adds nutrients to the soil. Mulch slows soil erosion, retains moisture and helps to prevent weeds. You’ll spend less time weeding and watering your garden and more time enjoying it.

4. Compost, Compost, Compost - Composting organic waste from your home improves garden soil because it generates humus. By composting you minimize your garbage wastes, thus lessening the greenhouse gases. You get extra savings from saved expenses in fertilizer solutions as well.

5. Opt for native shrubs - Native plants are better able to withstand drought conditions and poor soil. They resist unwanted plan diseases thus minimizing the need for harmful pesticides.

6. Attract Pollinators to Your Yard - By growing a variety of plants you increase the number of different wildlife species that are attracted to your garden. Bumble bees, wasps and hummingbirds provides an active ecological community by moving the pollen from one plant to the other.

7. Plant Deciduous Trees - Planting deciduous shade trees near your house will help cut your air conditioning bills in summer. In autumn deciduous plant trees lose their leaves which allows sunny breeze in your home reducing your high costs in heating. But, trees deliver more than cost savings; they are important carbon sinks and help to reduce global climate change.

8. Consider edible plants - Aside from beautifying your garden, it would be great if you can have edible shrubs in them. For example, runner beans, ruby chard, globe artichokes, nasturtiums and garlic chives blend happily with purely ornamental plants.

9. Choose natural resources - You can consider using recyclable concrete, reusable bricks and natural stones in your landscape designs rather than those exotic fuselage.

10. Find other options in power tools - You can use a push reel mower rather than a power mower. You can use a scythe or a pair of hand shears instead of a weed eater. Instead of a gas blower for leaves, use a rake or broom, or better still allow leaves to remain in place to decompose and add nutrients to the soil.

Better yet, create a homestead instead of the common lawn for your Koi ponds .

Vegetable Gardening

When using the costs of lifestyle rising all the time, it may be possible just to save dollars and improve your family’s health as well as by growing vegetables inside your backyard.

It’s a wise decision to decide your favorite fruit and vegetables to grow and plan beds for early, middle from the season plus late varieties.

Vegetable Gardening Tips

Many fruit and vegetables require at the least 6 hours of sunlight each day, some need eight. Some fast growers like lettuce plus radish could be grown between the rows of plants that take more time to mature, like beet or corn, thus making full use from the area available.

Throughout dry periods, vegetable smaller gardens need extra watering. Most vegetables take advantage of an inch or more of water each week, specially if they are fruiting.

During the particular growing season watch for insect pests. In case you discover a bug problem early it will likely be much simpler, however be careful to not use pesticides once the particular vegetable tend to be close to being picked unless it becomes an absolute necessity. Organic gardening is 1 healthy plus environment-friendly option. Once you have reaped your crop, put the vegetable waste into your compost pile so that it might be recycled for next spring.

Vegetable Gardening

It is important to protect your own veg backyard garden from wild animals looking for a tasty treat. Make sure your own backyard garden is all around by fencing that should keep out dogs, rabbits, and other animals. The damage done by wandering pets during one season can equal the particular price of fencing. Fencing may also serve as a frame for peas, beans, tomatoes, and even other crops that require support.

Protection is required to ensure that your own vegetable backyard garden to yield a bountiful harvest. Working hard will probably pay dividends if necessary precautions have been completely created.
