In addition to the main house, there is a Card House, Caretaker’s Cottage, the Cook/Butler’s House, an elephant garage, the Admiral’s House, the Boathouse with adjoining 600′ tunnel, and Gatehouse.

Construction of the Thunderbird Lodge was begun in 1936 by a man named George Whittell, or as he was more commonly called, the “Captain”. At the time, Whittell owned 40,000 acres and 24 miles of Nevada shoreline at Lake Tahoe and had plans to develop the land into high-class summer properties, a ski run and a $1 million hotel-casino. However, as Whittell grew older, his interest in animals, nature and privacy far outweighed his desire for more money and he held onto the property until his death in 1969.

I remember our first trip to Tahoe – the smells, the water, the air – it felt like a magical place.  I immediately knew this would be our home away from home.  And the dogs seemed to think so, too.

We welcome you to our home in the woods.  Incline Village is a vibrant community located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe close to shopping, the lake and many ski resorts.  Lake Tahoe ski facilities are world renowned with many new and renovated amenities, steep vertical drops and long, winding trails. Miles of terrain and endless views of snow-flocked pines, Sierra peaks and one very blue lake make the area a destination of choice for skiers.

The summer offers a bounty of water sports on the Lake – sailing, water skiing, wind surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking – of course you can always sit on the beach and just get your paws wet.  Incline Village is on the Nevada side of North Lake Tahoe, which sports five casinos – why not try your luck! Pull the handle at the nickel slots, play the field at the Craps table, or double down playing Blackjack…

Lake Tahoe is sprawling lake in the border between the US states of California and Nevada, which spans both the states. Situated in the valley of Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe basin is known for some of the best hiking spots in the United States. Even during the summer, the place is surrounded by the strange bedfellows of mist and bright sunshine, which provides a tailor-made environment for hiking. The river is surrounded by 74 acres of thick forest. Different varieties of bear species are abundant in this dense forest and a tourist is very likely to encounter some of the species. But almost all tourists will agree that hiking through Tahoe Rim Trail provide the best view of Lake Tahoe.

Incline Village Cabin

There are more than 135 trails and the best part is an 8-mile long trail that arches over Lake Tahoe between Kingsbury Grade and Star Lake. It is said that it will take several years for an incorrigible hiker to complete hiking in all the hiking trails in Lake Tahoe basin. Such is the number of hiking spots in Lake Tahoe basin that it can be safely declared that Lake Tahoe basin contains the most number of hiking spots per square kilometer in United States. The season begins from the second week of June. In the beginning of the season, the valley is particularly scenic, with wild flowers blooming in innocent abandon. But one should keep in mind that a wilderness permit from the state authorities should be obtained before embarking on a hiking trip.

Some of the must-hike hiking spots in the south shore of Lake Tahoe basin are Big Meadow and Frog & Winnemucca Lakes, each of which offers two miles of hiking stretch amidst a variety of flowers. In the east shore of the lake there is Marlette Lake, which offers five miles of hiking stretch and is filled with a variety of wild flowers. In the west shore, the ‘flowery’ hiking spots are Cascade Falls to Snow Lake, Eagle and Velma & Fontanillis Lakes, which are five miles long. In the north shore, one can hike through a sea of wild flowers in Donner Lake Area (two miles long), Donner Pass-Pacific Crest Trail, Mt. Rose (six miles long), and Squaw Valley (two miles long).

Some hiking stretches through the cliffs in Lake Tahoe basin are extremely difficult to engage in hiking. Such difficult trails in the south shore of Lake Tahoe include Moraine Trail (one mile long), Angora Lakes Trail (half mile), Tallac Historic Site (0.3 miles), Echo Lakes Trails (which provide a variety of trails of varying length), Glen Alpine Trail (two miles long), Clark Trail (1.6 miles long), and Mt. Tallac Trail (which provides strenuous hikes of varying lengths).

1. Hot tub. No matter what climate renters are visiting, any type of water is a big draw. The ability to relax outside even in the coldest cabin rental destinations is a big plus for many renters. You might even increase rentals during your shoulder season with this popular amenity.

2. Jacuzzi tub. If you don’t have the space or budget for a hot tub, consider bring your “water amenity” indoors. Many mountain cabin rental owners advertise jetted tubs or Jacuzzis knowing that their guests will enjoy a relaxing bath after a day on the slopes.

3. Porch/Balcony. If you own a mountain cabin rental, your guests will especially enjoy the views from a porch or balcony. Be sure to add comfortable seating like a swing or rocking chairs so guests can relax and take advantage of this amenity.

4. Pool table. A pool table is a must-have in many vacation cabin markets. Because the weather in snowy destinations can be unpredictable, a pool table is a great addition to keep guests happy indoors at your mountain cabin rental.

5. Foosball. While a pool table is quite popular among cabin rental owners, not everyone has the space or wants to worry about the upkeep. Another option that is smaller and more cost-effective is a foosball table, which is great for kids and adults alike.

6. Fireplace. For travelers that are visiting vacation cabins from warmer climates, a fireplace can be a special touch. Even if your renters have a fireplace at home, this amenity can provide added warmth – literally and figuratively – for your log cabin rental.

7. TV & DVD Player. Whether you own a luxury cabin rental or a more rustic version, a TV of at least 27″ is a must for the living room. DVD players are becoming a necessity, and many owners choose to provide a DVD library as well.

8. Video Games. Many parents realize that they can’t keep their kids away from video games for too long, even on vacation. Equipping your cabin rental with a video game console and some games is a bonus for many renters.

9. Wireless Internet. Wireless Internet is a must in almost every vacation home market, but especially for cabins. Many cabin rentals are located in areas with poor cell phone reception. Since renters are concerned with staying connected, Wi-Fi is a must for cabin rentals.

10. Cards/Board Games. Some of the easiest and least expensive additions for your cabin rental are cards and board games. Guests will appreciate this simple amenity in good weather or bad.

Tips for Renting Your Cabin

If you’re thinking about renting your vacation cabin or buying a cabin to rent, here are few quick and easy guidelines to help you get started.

Cabin Rental Do’s

• Create a cabin rental agreement. Protect yourself and your renters by having a contract that clearly states what is expected of both parties.

• Be aware of sales tax requirements in your area. Cabin rental owners in your area may be required to collect and remit sales tax from rental guests. Check with your local, county, and state tax authorities for details.

• Know which amenities renters are looking for. In many mountain cabin markets (like Gatlinburg, TN or the North Georgia Mountains), hot tubs and pool tables are must-haves! However, when searching for a lake cabin (like Big Bear, CA or Lake Tahoe) many renters look specifically for amenities like docks, paddle boats, and water toys.

• Consider accepting pets. Travelers with pets are a growing segment of the population and often look for cabins to rent on vacation. Don’t miss out by excluding them.

• Sell the cabin experience in your decor. Many travelers escape to a vacation cabin to get away from it all and appreciate rustic and cozy aesthetics like log furniture, quilts, and fishing decor.
